Mom moves offline to expand business

How many moms face the conflict of career vs. family? Wendy Navarro did.

Women entrepreneurs thrive in Orange County

A recent report about women business owners from American Express OPEN shouldn't have surprised anyone. It noted that California leads all other states in the number of businesses owned by women, and Orange-Los Angeles counties have the second most among U.S. metro areas behind New York-New Jersey.
Orange County-Los Angeles has almost 418,000 women-owned businesses; California almost 1.1 million, and the United States has more than 8.3 million. American Express OPEN is the credit card giant's small-business entity. Its report focuses on businesses in which women own 51 percent or more. Women are equal owners in 5 million other U.S. businesses.
Women entrepreneurs in California and Orange County have been among the nation's leaders for decades. In 1997, the National Association of Women Business Owners reported that Orange County (separate from Los Angeles) ranked 10th in number of women-owned businesses and 37 percent of the county's businesses were owned by women. In 2007, Orange County moved up to sixth in the nation, according to the U.S. Census Survey of Business Owners.
Wendy Navarro started Saige Nicole's as an online baby and toddler boutique operated from her Tustin home so she could be at home for her children. Last year she expanded to a brick-and-mortar space in OC Mart Mix in Costa Mesa.
Navarro has her children work in the business and hopes eventually it will grow large enough to pass on to her kids.
"I want to grow the business as a legacy for them," she said. "My children see me in business so they know there are all sorts of options open to them, though it's not easy."  - read more...
