How to Capture Your Best Family Holiday Portraits

Pumpkin season is officially here! And you know what that means... you'll be decking the halls and fa-la-la-la-la-ing before you know it. So before things get super-crazy for the season, it's time to tackle your family portrait for your holiday card and family gifts .

Here are some tips to help prepare for a fun family photo shoot:

1. Get your family EXCITED.
•    Talk UP the portrait session, treating it like a FUN experience so that the kids don't see it as a chore.
•    Prepare your kids ahead of time by telling them what to expect (still making it sound like FUN).
•    Ask your kids to bring along a favorite toy or something they love. Those items don't necessarily need to be IN the pictures, but they'll keep your kids happy in the new environment.
•    Make a fun DAY out of it, where the photo session is just ONE special event in the day. Ex: eat lunch out together, have your photo shoot, then take the kids to a favorite place of theirs.
•    Don't threaten punishment if they misbehave (ex: "no ice cream if you act up"). They won't enjoy being photographed if they're worried about getting in trouble.

2.  Coordinate your clothing ahead of time.
•    You don't necessarily have to be "matchy-matchy," but plan your outfits so you look like a cohesive group. It should look like you all bought your clothing from the same store.
•    Select 2-3 colors for a simple color scheme. If you know where the portrait will be displayed in your home, it's easy to select colors based on the decor of that room.
•    Prep your outfits in advance. Make sure you're all comfortable in your clothing and that it still fits properly.
•    Don't forget to plan your accessories, too. (Belts, earrings, socks, shoes, etc.)

3.  Take your family portrait ASAP.
•    Photographers book up QUICKLY this time of year. The later it gets, the more difficult it will be to get an appointment.
•    Weather is unpredictable. If you'd like to take your family portrait in an outdoor setting, it's best to take it now before the weather turns wetter.
•    You'll have time to order those holiday cards and mail them out. While others are still scrambling around (or give up entirely), you'll be done.
•    You'll save money by ordering photo gifts early, instead of paying extra to beat those nasty shipping deadlines.
